On 21-26 September 2020, the 180th AUN-QA Programme Assessment was conducted at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). It is the first ever AUN-QA Assessment to be conducted at the university. This assessment continues the trend of successful productive AUN-QA Assessments that utilize online/remote site visits with new universities joining in. 

 

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world and caused a sudden shift in all aspects of society, forcing rapid changes that we have never witnessed before within such a short time. The UM International Webinar Series 5 invited 3 prominent associations (AUN, APRU, and AUA) to share and discuss how each organization is adapting and adopting new measures to ensure the continuity of their activities and also explored insights from the three university associations leaders on their response towards the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

The Young SEAkers ASEAN-China Youth Forum is a c roundtable session that was a part of the FutureChina Global Forum 2020. The Youth Forum seeks to complement the main forum by providing a platform for youths to express their opinions. This is the first time the youth forum is explicitly open to participants from across the ASEAN region.

This panel session explored the opportunities post COVID-19 and insights from the perspective of university students in ASEAN and China regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students’ activity and expectations.

 

On 15-16 September 2020, Viet Nam, the current chair of ASEAN, hosted the ASEAN High-Level Conference on Human Resources Development (HRD) in a Changing World. This virtual conference provides a space for delegates of ASEAN countries, intergovernmental organizations as well as transnational organizations to share their experiences in working in the HRD area in the ASEAN region. One of the most important agendas this year was to launch the “Roadmap of the ASEAN Declaration on Human Resources Development for the Changing World of Work”, which covers the HRD work plans of many ASEAN sectoral bodies.

Research Festival (RESFES 2020) is a specialized contest to share and exchange knowledge and experience about science – technology, business administration, languages, etc. between students of FPT Education and other universities.

 

This year, the theme of RESFES is "What should we do if the global pandemic happens?" Students will be asked to do research to come up with solutions for all aspects of society from economics to medical technology. They will be split into four subcommittees focusing on different fields: Information Technology, Graphic Design, Business Administration and Languages.

2nd AUN-QA Online/Remote Site Visit at Universitas Indonesia echoes success of the first
On 14-18 September 2020, the 179th AUN-QA Programme Assessment was conducted at Universitas Indonesia. It is the second online/remote site visit, following the success of the first at Universitas Andalas. Through the preparation and cooperation between the host university, AUN-QA Assessor team, and the AUN-QA Secretariat; this assessment was a great success.

 

After the success of the first batch of online/remote site visits in September, the AUN-QA continues to be ahead of the curve during the pandemic by delivering its trademark brand of quality assurance through an online medium with another 5 programme assessments in October.

 

ASEAN Community Building continues to be one of the region's greatest feats considering its cultural diversity. Universitas Andalas helps AUN-QA set tone for future Online/Remote Site Visits
The 178th AUN-QA Programme Assessment and first ever deployment of the Online/Remote Site Visit concluded this week. The practices set by Universitas Andalas set the standard and act as an example for the quality of an effective Online/Remote Site Visit for AUN-QA Programme Assessments. This success is testament to the fact that the delivery of the AUN-QA’s quality assurance services is effective no matter how it is delivered.

 

The government of Lao has employed preventive measures against COVID-19 since the beginning of January 2020. This includes the ‘Education COVID-19 Response Plan’ where all universities and higher institutions in Laos are to refer to the MOE’s updated reports. The National University of Laos, being the country’s biggest public university with the largest number of foreign students, implemented several preventive measures in the academic community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest invites students to conduct in-depth intellectual works on how ASEAN and Korea can navigate through the present uncertainties and turn this crisis into an opportunity under the theme “ASEAN-Korea Digital Partnership in the Post-COVID-19 Era”.

AUN-QA Assessments: It’s ON(LINE)
This week marks an auspicious venture for the AUN-QA Network and, by extension, the ASEAN higher education sector. For the first time since February this year, AUN-QA returns to realizing its primary function of ensuring excellent quality assurance—but with a twist. The 178th Programme Assessment, conducted at Universitas Andalas, is done remotely through the use of digital technology. Assessments are on(line). We are back.

 

The China Scholarship Council (CSC), in collaboration with the AUN Secretariat, awarded 30 students from ASEAN countries graduate-level full-scholarships to study in Chinese universities this upcoming 2021 academic year. A new selection system was put in place by the AUN Secretariat to ensure that the most suitable candidates are selected based on credible procedures and criteria.

 

On 27 August 2020, the ASEAN-QA Online Forum Series 2 was held with the theme “Going Digital: Learning from Learners”. Students were invited to speak their minds on their experience with the shocking transition to online learning as a result of COVID-19 to give Quality Assurance practitioners a better idea of the student perspective on the current state of higher education. 

 

Experts from 11th ASEAN Connectivity Symposium agree that digitalization is key in every sector
On 28 August 2020, Viet Nam, with the support of the ASEAN Secretariat and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), organized the 11th ASEAN Connectivity Symposium under the theme “Enhancing ASEAN Cohesiveness, Responsiveness through Resilient Connectivity and Human Capital Development”. The webinar drew in over 150 participants and 13 experts from ASEAN Sectoral Bodies in various sectors. The consensus built from the webinar was that one of the largest factors of change has and will come from an increase in demand and the impact of digitalization in every sector.

 

Having to choose between building something completely new and trendy versus preserving something storied and cultured is always a difficult choice. Architecture is no stranger to this. Many historical buildings fall into disrepair and have to face impending demolition to be replaced with a new construction project. But can these buildings hold more value if preserved as opposed to simply discarding them? Here is one intern’s perspective.

AUN-QA Online/Remote Site Visits begin this month!
Four ASEAN Universities will have their study programmes assessed by AUN-QA through the Online/Remote Site Visit this month! 

 

On 26 August 2020, the AUN Disability and Public Policy Network (AUN-DPPnet) had their Executive Board Meeting 2020/2021. The Meeting was informed of AUN-DPPnet's major achievements from 2019 until May 2020. These include both consistently high quality inclusive academic programs, newly created innovative tools that help create a more accessible world for PWDs, and groundbreaking research.  

 

AUN-HRE continues to propel human rights and peace education forward with new regional collaborative program
ASEAN/Southeast Asia is propelling human rights and peace education forwards. While the region houses a number of courses in those subjects, full degree programs are still lacking in half of the ASEAN Member States. AUN-HRE is starting an initiative to fill that existing void. Based on the formal endorsement of both SOM-ED and the AUN Board of Trustees, the AUN-HRE Meeting held on 25 August 2020, kicked off an ambitious but much needed project towards the establishment of a regional collaborative graduate program in human rights and/or peace where students and academics from multiple institutions across the region come together.

COVID-19 Pandemic for a Change: Revamping Online/Remote Site Visit in the AUN-QA Programme Assessment

On 18 August 2020, Vietnam National University-Hanoi (VNU) and the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Secretariat jointly organized an international conference to introduce the “University Performance Metrics” (UPM) initiated and developed by VNU researchers. UPM is a rating system, the development of which was funded by the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training, to assess the responsiveness of universities in the 4th Industrial Revolution era. The rating system will also provide a tool that will allow universities to be able to form bilateral cooperative efforts like exchange and research programs through its robust criteria. 

 

AUN-QA Certificates Presented to Mahidol University
AUN-QA Programme Assessment Certificates were presented to 8 study programmes who have undergone and passed the AUN-QA Programme Assessment at Mahidol University on 10 August 2020. AASYP Reset is a virtual innovation challenge inviting recent graduates, current university students and young professionals of all disciplines across ASEAN and Australia to collaborate on projects that foster stronger people to people connections between youth in our region. 

 

Work in a team of between two to four people, registered participants will conduct research, apply design thinking approaches and reimagine new possibilities to enhance people to people relations between youth across Australia and the ASEAN region.

 

Eligibility: Citizens of Australia or an ASEAN member state aged 18-29 years.

Leaders of ASEAN Higher Education Institutions share how to provide quality education amidst global pandemic
On 12 August 2020, to celebrate ASEAN Month and the 53rd Anniversary of the Founding of ASEAN, the Commission of Higher Education Regional Office 1 of the Philippines in partnership with the ASEAN University Network hosted a free webinar entitled "Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN 2020: Strengthening Education Collaboration among ASEAN Higher Education Institutions during the COVID-19 Pandemic". University presidents, rectors, and vice chancellors shared their practices in sustaining the delivery of quality education in spite of the pandemic. 

 

LITEC 2020 focuses on "Personalized Learning"
The Learning Improvement and Teaching Enhancing Conference (LITEC) is a platform for educators to share innovative ideas, research, and the best practices in education. This year, the conference will focus on "Personalized Learning" which is an increasingly method of teaching that incorporates each student's specific characteristics into the process of teaching. 

 

On 6 August 2020, the Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) organised a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Webinar titled “What Does Interaction Contribute to the Online Learning Experience: Developing Community through Dialogue and Discussion”. During the webinar, which drew an attendance of close to 260 participants across 13 countries, Professor Brett reviewed some of the key understandings from decades of Learning Sciences research on learning and teaching in online settings to demonstrate how and why interaction in online courses can support deep learning.

The first gathering of the brightest minds in ASEAN architecture convened at the AUN-ADERA Inaugural Meeting and Symposium on 27-28 July 2020 where they discussed the significance of conserving modern architectural heritages and future plans of the subnetwork. The establishment of AUN-ADERA is one of the deliverables promised during the 10th AUN Rectors Meeting and 34th AUN Board of Trustees Meeting in 2018.

 

Unveiling the Brand New “University Performance Metrics” System at Vietnam National University, Hanoi
University Performance Metrics, or UPM, is a rating system for higher education institutions initiated by researchers from Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the development of which was funded by the Vietnam Ministry of Higher Education and Training. The UPM system provides a university benchmarking framework that evaluates Third Generation Universities and how well they have adapted to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

 

Science, technology, innovation – not only are these the buzzwords of the 21 st  century, but these are the cornerstones of our future. The ASEAN-ROK Award for Excellence in Science, Technology and Innovation accredits young scientists and engineers, who are of ASEAN nationality, with exemplary academic and professional achievements. On 9 July 2020, Singapore Management University’s Centre for Teaching Excellence organised a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Webinar titled Pedagogically driven course design: Moving beyond technical solutions to create truly engaging and impactful learning experiences which drew in over 270 participants from 11 countries. 

 

Intern Sharing - On being virtual and contributing to an ongoing crisis
Wing Jun Cheng was an intern from the Chinese University of Hong Kong who was the AUN's first fully virtual intern. Before completing his internship with our office, he reflected a final time on his experience on being a virtual intern and contributing to the ongoing effort to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic.

QA experts, including AUN-QA Technical Team's Johnson Ong Chee Bin, discussed quality assurance in the COVID and post-COVID era as part of a webinar series organized by EU-SHARE. E-assessments and quality assurance for online learning were among the topics discussed.

Mr. Muhammad Azim bin Anuar from Universiti Brunei Darussalam was the last on-site intern at the AUN before Thailand went into lockdown to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. After safely returning home, Azim resumed his internship with us from home through a virtual internship program. We invited him to share his unique experiences with the AUN internship program.

Chihiro Aita, an AUN intern from Macalester College, shares her opinions on the suspension of student mobility programs amid the COVID-19 pandemic, what it means for students, and how universities can take advantage of the unique circumstances to provide even better experiences in spite of the hardships.

The AUN-QA Network welcomed 10 new Associate Members in April 2020.

As the pandemic rages and borders remain closed, ACTS continues to monitor the decline in student mobility. Some universities are welcoming prospective exchange students to join through the internet but physical mobility is still uncertain going into 2021. 

If you are a student interested in learning about the Indonesian language and culture, then Universitas Airlangga's new program LINGUA may interest you! The program has courses for both beginners and intermediates. It will take place over a semester (5 months, 50 meetings). Scholarships are also available for international students. The program will take place from September-December 2020.

On 11 June 2020, the council approved groundbreaking initiatives which include the brand new Guide to AUN-QA Assessment at Programme Level Version 4.0, the first ever online/remote site visit in AUN-QA Programme Assessment history, and approved the Master Class Training Workshop project idea for the Appointed AUN-QA Tier 1 Trainer. 

The Meeting has decided to conduct a week-long arts and culture e-activities program after considering the COVID-19 situation and government responses reported by representatives from various ASEAN countries.

This is the first time that SHARE’s Policy Dialogue is organized as an online webinar and it is one of the first ever webinar series to be synchronized online via the Youtube platform. AUN-QA Technical Team’s very own Mr. Johnson Ong Chee Bin has also been invited to speak about Quality Standards for Online and Distance Higher Education on 25 June. 

As part of our response to COVID-19, we are pleased to announce that we have welcomed four virtual interns who are join us from Hong Kong and USA. Their official orientation took place on 9 June 2020 via Zoom.
